Frequently Asked Questions About Wall Leaks

How do I know if I have a leak inside my walls?
Leaks behind your walls will usually stain your drywall, so they should not be very difficult to spot.  However, the location of the stained drywall may or may not be the actual location of the leak - it may just be where the leaking water is collecting.

Why should I even worry about leaks inside my walls?
Leaks inside your walls can pose health and safety hazards and need to be repaired immediately.  Water-logged wood can compromise the structural integrity of walls (and therefore, of the building).  Mold also likes to grow in moist places.

But why should I worry about mold if I don't see it?
The presence of mold can create an unpleasant odor, so even though you don't see mold you might still smell it.  Breathing in mold spores is also bad for your health, and has been linked to a variety of allergic reactions and breathing problems, including asthma.

Should I worry about mold if there is no longer a leak?
In a word, maybe.  Mold can continue to grow even if there is no leak.  This can occur for a variety of reasons.  For example, if the leak was slow and persistent and the wood framing around the leak soaked up much of the water, that water can evaporate for weeks or months, raising the humidity of the air behind the drywall and encouraging the growth of mold.

What should I do if I suspect that I have a leak somewhere inside my walls?
If you notice leaks behind your wall, determine the source of the leak if you can and turn off the water in the area of the leak.  If you are unable to locate the source of the leak and/or turn off the water there, turn off the main water supply inside the building.  Then call Angel Plumbers immediately and we will be there to fix your problem.  We will also guide you through the steps you should take to ensure that you stop mold growth before it starts.
